Tescos, Sainsbury's, Morrisons, Waitrose, Specialist Farm shops, delis (but not the likes of Holland and Barrett - they are no good for anything very much.) Or take a Polish speaking friend to a Polish shop and see if they can find you something.
In supermarkets look in the pickles and preserve sections. I love the stuff myself, but being diabetic needs to be taken with caution!
they're not for sale in most supermarkets. only caramelized onion marmalade/chutney. i eventually found them in waitrose in the section with mint/apple/redcurrant sauce, etc (not with the pickles). but in the end i just made them myself using the method described by judi and others below

dont ,they are so easy to make ,and keep for agood week in the fridge once made and longer if sealed in ajar with an air tight lid while still boiling(in the cupboard for up to 6 weeks).
the method is realy simple.peal and slice your onions(aprox 500g)place in alarg sauspan, with 200g sugarand mix .Add enough malt vinegar to dampen the sugar but not disolve it.If you add to much liquid at this stage dont worry it just takes alittle longer to cook.now place the pan on the stove, maximum heat .stiring every couple of minutes, untill the sugar has meltedand caramelised to a rich golden brown.Thats it 5minutes after it starts to boil.tip of the week is to clean the pan, just fill with hot soapy water and leave to stand over night. The next dayit will wash clean with out scubbing.
Make your own. Slice the onions and gently fry in a very little oil or butter and sprinkle with sugar. Cook until browned and soft.

She's a cook and she tells you to buy them in a jar???? What is the world coming to? They are the easiest things to make!! Sugar sweetie, is all you need. XX
Make your own. It is quick and easy. Chop your onions and add S%26amp;P. Put butter in a skillet and put on high do not burn butter. Once the butter is going bring down the heat then add the onions. Stir the onions and in less than 5 min. you will have carmelized homemade onions. It's so worth doing yourself.
