How should i cure my La Chamba clay tagine before using?

the la chamba tagine is from high-heat-fired black clay, made by hand in colombia. sold at crate and barrel, i heated it in the oven with water according to instructions, it smells odd. i don't know if it's ready to use, or if the smell will transfer to the food. How should i cure my La Chamba clay tagine before using?
no, it will not transfer. I have used this for years and it just smells that way, nothing to worry about. How should i cure my La Chamba clay tagine before using?
My La Chamba doesn't smell but I did find on Google books a passage where it said it was made with "donkey dung" (like that) that children go to pick it up and I was concerned about both the dung being in my clayware and kids getting sick from it! :-( Maybe yours got too much dung? (No not a joke)
