Hello everyone. My girlfriend actually goes to BSU currently, and she has never really toured Boston. I am up here visiting her(we are both from NC), and we are just curious to places to see, things to do, places to eat, and also how walkable it is. We will probably be taking the train, as the traffic I'm sure is horrendous. We know we are going to the New England Aquarium, and probably the zoo too, so how close is everything else to that? Thanks in advance, appreciate it everyone. How walkable is Boston?
very walkable
most attractions are pretty close, and for those that aren't, you can take the T which goes just about everywhere
Boston is regularly rated as one of the most walkable cities in the country. It's easy to walk from Kenmore Square (Boston U, Fenway Park) to Park St (Boston Common) to Government Center (Fanuel Hall, Quincy Market) and a few blocks from there to the New England Aquarium.
The Franklin Park Zoo is not as accessible unfortunately, as it's located near Jamaica Plain, but only a short trip away down the Orange Line, just as the Boston Science Museum is a very short T ride down the Green Line, but not as accessible via walking. The U.S.S. Constitution in Charlestown is another semi-accessible and worthwhile trip. For more information I'd recommend visiting the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority's website at http://mbta.com.How walkable is Boston?
Boston is very walkable. If you don't have a cell phone with a data plan make sure to map out what you are going to do so you know how to get there by walking or using public transportation. I live in Boston and I didn't bring my car here when I moved because I think having a car is more of a hassle in the city. If you are visiting for a week you should get a weekly commuter pass. It is 15 dollars and you can ride any bus or subway for the whole week. Definitely worth your while if you plan on doing a lot of sightseeing.
You should definitely do the freedom trail. Its a good self-guided walking tour that takes you past all or most of the historical places in Boston among other things.
but to answer your direct question: yes, boston is very walkable
It's relatively walkable, depending where you go. Definitely look up Faneuil Hall in Boston, it's a really pretty place and awesome for lunch!
very walkable but, when it comes time to go the bathroom, and sometimes suddenly...it can be challenging to find a place
Very walkable, yes aquarium, clubs.
Boston is very walkable, and has great public transportation. The aquarium is centrally located a short walk from Faneuil Hall and parts of the Freedom Trail.
Which zoo are you talking about? The zoos I can think of aren't very close to the aquarium and aren't in very walkable areas. One is in a sketchy area and one is in the suburbs. (Although I think one is close to a historic cemetery...Forest Hills?) I tend to divide Boston into "T places" and "car places", and would classify the zoo as a car place.
In Faneuil Hall and Copley Square there are "Bos Tix" booths that sell half price day of show tickets. I love the Improv Asylum (which is near the Aquarium) and Improv Boston.
Wagamama in Faneuil Hall is great and near the Aquarium. If you are a sea food purist, you might like the No Name Restaurant on the docks (which is vaguely near the aquarium) for super-fresh, super-cheap, very simple seafood.
I love the restaurant Penang, but that's in China Town.
I'd check out the Harvard Museum of Natural History and (if your budget allows) the Museum of Science (though that one is expensive).
Duck Tours are expensive but a neat idea.
