I've never been to Boston?

We are planning to go to Boston as a family this summer. I know it's a bit early to plan for a little summer trip, but I was bored so I was just looking around, but I cant really get a sense of like location or anything.

I was thinking about the New England Aquarium and I was thinking if there are like good places to go near this aquarium that are like walking distance. I dont wanna just go there for a little aquarium visits. Any good shopping places?I've never been to Boston?
Here is something I put together for a friend a few years ago - but all the information is relevant. Boston is considered a 'walking' city and there are a TON of things to do downtown - all within walking distance of the aquarium. There is actually a shopping center located very near the aquarium called Quincy Market/Faneuil Hall.

Have fun!

First, check out www.bostonusa.com to get some ideas of what may be going on in town while you are there. I also suggest you pick up Boston For Dummies – it’s a great book and will give you directions on how to get to a lot of places.

If you’ve never been before, you may consider purchasing an MBTA subway pass. That way you’ll never have to worry about having exact change for the subway. You can make this purchase at www.mbta.com. They offer the passes in 1, 3, and 7-day passes. If flying into Boston through Logan International Airport, you can pick-up the blue line (in bound) to get to downtown Boston.

FYI – when taking the subway, more commonly known as the “T” – if you want to head towards ‘downtown’ Boston (i.e. State Street/Park Street) then you’ll want to take an “in bound” train, anywhere away from those points, would be an ‘outbound train.’

All of the locations that I suggest below are accessible from the “T.”

For things to do – Boston has a ton – it all depends on what you are looking to do. I would first suggest that you take a tour or trolley; it’ll give you great insight as to where ‘touristy’ things are located. Please note, that Boston is considered a ‘walking city,’ which means, that even though things may look very far apart on map, in actuality, they probably aren’t. There are several tours/trolleys to choose from. One unique tour is the Boston Duck Tour (http://www.bostonducktours.com). These tours sell out quickly, so you’ll have to take advantage of this when you first arrive to Boston. This tour is good rain or shine. You can board from either near the Boston Science Center or the Prudential Center. You can also purchase tickets at either location. When I was in Boston in 2006, you could also purchase tickets at Fanueil Hall (see below).

You’ll more than likely want to partake in the Freedom Trail walk. There is/are tours by bus you can take, but if you like to walk (and are able), walking it is like no other. You can go to the official website (http://www.thefreedomtrail.org/) to print out a map and get information on what the trail is all about. While on the north end - check out North Boston - or the Italian part of Boston - great food here!

If you like sports, baseball especially, see about doing a tour of Fenway Park. http://boston.redsox.mlb.com/bos/ballpar…

If you are looking for ‘greener’ pastures, check out the Boston Common and Children’s Garden, as well as take a stroll along the Charles River (down the esplanade).

Fanueil Hall and Quincy Market are another good stop. Usually there are street performers and music going on. http://www.faneuilhallmarketplace.com/

The Boston Aquarium is another great stop and near the Fanueil Marketplace. You can find out more about the Aquarium by going to http://www.neaq.org/. While here, you can also sign up to do a whale watch out of the Boston Harbor.

There are plenty of college campuses to check out – MIT, Harvard, Northeastern, Boston University, Boston College, etc.

If shopping is your thing, check out Newbury Street - http://www.newbury-st.com/.

If you’d like to see a show – check out Blue Man Group – http://www.blueman.com/. It’s a complete one-of-a-kind show. There is nothing like it.

Other things to check out are: Cheers, Christian Science Reflecting Pool, Copley Square, Boston Children’s Museum, Boston Science Museum, Isabella Stuart Gardner Art Museum (there are many museums in Boston), etc.

Some good restaurants are The Black Rose, The Purple Shamrock, Chart House, and Legal Seafoods.

Have a great time.
Boston is a VERY walkable city.

Norabama is correct but needs both spelling and judging distance lessons. It is Faneuil Hall Marketplace, not 'Fanuale'. Also the North End begins just a 5 minute walk away, not a mile. Also within walking distance: historic, preserved Beacon Hill. What is not quickly walkable is just a short subway hop.I've never been to Boston?
The first 2 posts have the area covered however they did not mention Copley Place the best high end shopping in Boston(take the Green line from Government Center Station). Also Unmentioned is the restaurant at 13 Fish Pier It is a bare bones restaurant with no name, no frills and the best chowder in New England.
If you are coming to this area, you should include Cape Cod on your itinerary. Especially the town of Sandwich! Boston has water tours, trolley history tours, excellent museums, Faneuil Hall and lots of wonderful seafood restaurants. The campus of Harvard University is a must see as well as a visit to the North end for all things *Italian*. Hope you enjoy a fun time here.
I have lived here in Boston all my life and I would tell you go to the John Hancock and go to the top but that has been closed for 7 years. They closed it after 9/11. Your best bet would be to go to the Prudential because you can go to the top and there is a mall in there as well.

David your better off taking the Orange line to Back Bay that lets you off right across the street from Copley mall. Much easier.

Also Copley Mall and Prudential mall are connected so you could see both.
right across the greenway/old surface street is Faneuil Hall market place.about a mile on the same side as NEA is the north end.For Fancy try Philipes for casual Sal's pizza[best in Mass ,even better than pizzeria Regina]Hit Maria's bakery for cannoli. If here Sunday morning go to china town for dimsum. You could also go to Carmine d'Nunzio's cheese shop,But be polite as the FBI says he's Boston's Boss
Fanueil market is good

the new england aquarium is fun

the Boston museum of science

The north end has great Italian food

go see the red sox even if you arent a fan its a really pretty old park and it is so much fun for the whole family I love it there
