The search function allows you to search books, wikipedia, web, and the dictionary. You do not have to be online for the dictionary.

I answered your same question previously. I typed in your word (tagine) from within the built-in dictionary. It was NOT from online, and worked perfectly. As a matter of fact, you can choose from several different dictionaries when you set your Kindle up.
