I am going to San Francisco too this end of the month! I've never been there. This is a VERY GOD QUESTION!!!!
Thank YOU!San Francisco... ANY TIPS?
San Francisco is a great place for a vacation.
You will be able to take the BART right from the airport to the city and I would definitely buy a Muni Passport (they have them for 1, 3, and 7 days). It allows you to use the streetcars, light rail vehicles, buses, electric trolley coaches, and the cable cars, You can buy them from 8am to 8pm at the information booths in the baggage claim areas of SFO.
There are many options for things to do...here are some favorites:
Cable Car ride (of, course)
Golden Gate Bridge
Golden Gate Park (Japanese Tea Garden) - ride a bike
Chinatown - eat Chinese, enjoy the sights, smells and sounds (you will feel like you are in China!)
Embarcadero and Financial District - shopping and huge skyscrapers
Neighborhoods.....North Beach (great restaurants, interesting area), Marina (outdoor cafes) - lovely neighborhoods, Nob Hill (great views)
Fisherman's Wharf %26amp; Pier 39 - clam chowder served in "sour dough" bowl, street entertainment, and shopping
Also, check out some unique tours and free things to do (including free museum days) at: http://www.memorable-getaways.com/san-francisco-tourist-guide.html
There are many wonderful restaurants to try.....especially in the North Beach and Marina Neighborhoods.
ENJOY!
Smart choice to not have a car in SF. Use public transportation to explore the city. Purchase a multi day pass so you can ride all the Muni convayances. Cable Car fare is now $5 one way so the pass pays for itself if you only take a cable car a few times!

If you want to visit Alcatraz buy tickets ahead of time on line as the tours [especially night tour] sell out days in advance.

Since it has been 15 years since your last visit you will see a lot of changes in the city. In particular you should revisit the following places.
Embarcadro - Since the freeway came down the waterfront has opened up and the renovation of the ferry building is worth a trip just to enjoy all the great food and views in that area.
The DeYoung Museum in Golden Gate Park has a brand new building and the Asian Art Museum now has its own building in the Civic Center Area. While in Civic Center take a short trip to the new public library, in particular the 6th floor exhibition space and San Francisco History Room.
Check out the Beach Chalet in Golden Gate Park, restored murals on the first floor, brew pub with amazing views of the sunset over the Pacific Ocean.
Enjoy!
Don't spend a dime until you get here. You're gonna need every last penny to survive a vacation out here.
Im from San Francisco and live here.
If you dont have a car you can use the Muni, BART, Cable Car.
Yes you can go to Alcatraz you buy the tickets close to Pier 39. You can take the night and the day tour and the Golden Gate tour. You just have to buy the packet.
You can go to the:
