subspecies is the wrong word
it is a unique species with similar characteristics
The taxonomy of bears has gone from extreme splitting a century ago (almost every skin was described as new) to extreme lumping, which would place both bears in the same species, along with almost all the other temperate zone bears of the world. I am willing to consider these two subspecies of the same species, although I'm not sure I would want to include all the other species that have been lumped in with them.Is the kodiak bear a subspecies of Grizzly?
Ursus arctos is the name for the brown bear (species)
Two major subspecies of ursus arctos are ursus arctos horribilis (grizzly bear) and ursus arctos middendorffi (kodiak bear).
So they are both in the same species, but are distinct subspecies
